Peek of the Week

May 11, 2020

Dear SJCS Families,

Happy Mother’s Day to all of our very special mothers at St. John’s.  I believe that the gift of motherhood is one of God’s greatest blessings. We have been tasked with such important and difficult work in raising our children, but the fruit it bears is entirely worth the effort!

We are down to the last few weeks of school and I know my children are looking forward to summer vacation!  But first, we have some learning to get through.  As you are likely discovering, it becomes more challenging to get students to want to put in effort once the weather turns nicer.  This challenge is true in the classroom as well as at home! Luckily the snow made it feel more like March this weekend…I continue to tell our families to do the best that you can.  Our children have been handed a significant and abrupt change in their classroom and learning routines and the impact of it all is still yet to be determined.  So, do the best you can and don’t sweat the small stuff.

I will be meeting with 8th grade parents this week to discuss options for graduation, as well as scheduling Zoom meetings in the coming weeks for our parents scheduled to have students in grades 1-4 next year.  I hope these are constructive in detailing plans for the future at St. John’s, both short term and long term.

This Friday we will have our annual Crowning of Mary at 10am on Facebook Live.  We encourage our students to login and participate if they are able.  We will also be praying the rosary during this time period, so get your rosaries out and login for our annual Crowning ceremony. Although it will look different this year, we are blessed to have technology that will bring it into the homes of our families.

God Bless,

Shelly Wheeler

Dear SJCS Families,

May is finally here and the weather has been glorious this weekend! I hope your families were able to spend some time outside enjoying the sun and warm(er) temperatures!  I wish I was getting ready to greet all the students tomorrow morning in car line, but alas, we begin our seventh week of remote learning tomorrow.  I continue to pray this pandemic will disappear so that we can capture some normalcy in our lives, particularly for our children. As we prepare for the last 5 weeks of learning, I would ask our parents to fill out our Remote Learning Survey for us to plan and prepare for the remaining weeks.  Ideally I would have sent this out a few weeks ago, but as many of you know, working parents who are now assisting with remote learning are struggling to get everything done each day (or is it just me?). J  Feel free to fill out the form separately for different children in your home.

We are making plans for our 8th grade graduation, and many of the decisions will be based upon Governor Mills’ orders regarding gatherings of people.  I will have a Zoom meeting for 8th grade parents on May 11 at 7:00pm to go over some of our options.  You will be receiving the link this week for you to login and discuss it with me and some other teachers/staff.  If you’re thinking of options, please bring them forward!

Next year’s plans are being finalized; you should have a document in your inbox by the end of the week that will announce what classrooms and groupings will look like for the 2020-2021 school year.  Much of this is contingent upon enrollment – so if you haven’t enrolled yet and plan to, please do so as soon as possible.  I will waive the enrollment fee for the time being and we can add it to tuition, please ask if you  would like to take advantage of this option.  Additionally, if you are planning to request financial aid, I am requesting that all applications be submitted by Friday, May 15.  After this date, our financial aid award budget line will be offered to new students and families.  Thank you for understanding.

God’s grace is shining on our school, even in the midst of a pandemic.   We are blessed to have exceptional teachers (HAPPY TEACHER’S APPRECIATION WEEK) who are working tirelessly to provide work that is appropriate and engaging for your children.   All student needs are different, so this is quite a task.  If it’s not working for your child, that is okay!  Do the best that you can, that’s all we ask of our families. Have a wonderful week.

God Bless,

Shelly Wheeler

February 2, 2020

Dear SJCS Families,

I’m writing this note from my office as the fathers and daughters are enjoying themselves at our first annual Father/Daughter Dance.   The girls and their dads, grandads, uncles, and family friends are having such a good time! It’s heartwarming to watch this particular group of our SJCS family have some time to enjoy each other.  As so many of us know, these years go so quickly. I hope this evening of dressing up, dancing, and a little silliness, makes a special memory for years to come for both the men and the little girls.  A giant THANK YOU to our eighth graders who made this evening possible, and to the eighth-grade moms (Mrs. Kerr & Mrs. Nelson specifically) that pulled it all together! Also, thank you to the generous families who spent time baking for this event and providing snacks for all!

Online re-enrollment is opening this week.  We had a delay in setting the final tuition for the 2020-2021 school year.  A tuition letter will be coming out explaining a little about the finances and how we arrived at the final numbers.  Running a school on tuition is challenging, as the tuition dollars coming in don’t quite cover the teacher salaries and health insurance.  We rely on the parish subsidy and fundraising to finance the actual operation of the buildings, administration, custodial staff, kitchen staff, etc…  I do promise we are doing everything we can to keep tuition costs as low as we can, while still operating at a level at which our families can expect a superior Catholic education.  More information to come at the beginning of the week.

Congratulations to our Spelling Bee & Geography Bee Winners this past week! The spelling bee champion for 2020 is 5th grader, Maeve Coughlin and runner-up is 8th grader, Sophie Gonzales.  Our Geography Bee winner for 2020 is 8th grader Sophie Gonzalez and runner up is 7th grader Curtis Wheeler.  They were fun competitions to watch and we congratulate all of our contestants that earned spots in the school bee (they had to win top 3 in their classroom to qualify for the school bee).

We have been blessed with some warm and snow-less days in January!  As it currently stands we are scheduled to get out of school on June 11.  If we have another snow day, the year will go to June 12, and so on.  We have not picked a date for 8th grade graduation or field day yet, as we will wait to see how many more snow days we might expect so we can set realistic dates for these end of year events. You’ll notice in the “Coming Up” dates below that we have scheduled dates for the Curriculum Fair and Spring Concert, so you can mark them on your calendar now!

As always, if you have questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact me!

(I apologize for the note coming during the Super Bowl – I normally would have tried to send this earlier but had a bit of a busy day!)

God Bless,

Shelly Wheeler
