Dear SJCS Families,
We have completed 22 days of school this year, only 153 to go! We are so blessed that we’ve been able to return 5 days per week with in-person instruction. It’s hard to believe that October is here this week! The students are thriving, and the teachers are settling into their routines with their classes. It’s a beautiful sight to watch the learning that’s happening in our classrooms!
Jackets & Sweaters
Several of our students have identical fleece jackets and sweaters, because they’ve been ordered through our uniform vendor. PLEASE make sure your child’s name is on his/her jacket or sweater – with so many children wearing the same size it’s nearly impossible for us to find the correct owner of a jacket once it’s been left behind. I know these items are costly, so help us return them to your child by labeling it with their name inside. Thank you!
It’s been a little chilly some days, just a reminder for parents:
Temps above 60 – Students can go outside without a jacket
Temps between 50-60 – Students need a sweatshirt, sweater, or light jacket
Temps below 50 – Students need a jacket
We shouldn’t need this information for a while, but anytime the temperature dips below 15 in the winter we will have inside recess. Please make sure your child has a hat and mittens/gloves when the temperatures start to drop!
The menu is loaded in ParentWeb through December, if you want to sign up for pizza every Friday you can go in and sign up for each Friday at your convenience, no need to wait until the week of your order. We may start to add additional topping choices and those will be loaded in soon. You can also add money to your lunch account through our ParentWeb site or app – this would relieve you of the need to send in $2 or $4 each Friday because we would deduct it from the balance on your lunch account.
The uniform holiday was INCORRECT last week. The correct date is Thursday, October 8. The cost is $2/student or $5/family. Students may wear their choice of clothing, here are a few of the “rules” that go along with our uniform holidays:
- Hoodies are allowed, students may not wear them up on their heads in the building
- Leggings are NOT allowed – girls should not wear tight fitting leggings as pants
- Ripped jeans are NOT allowed
- Hats are NOT allowed in the building
- Inappropriate pictures and/or phrases on shirts are NOT allowed
- Crocs are NOT allowed (they are never allowed)
- Sandals are NOT allowed (they are never allowed)
All St. John’s students in grades 1-8 take the NWEA MAP test in the Fall, Winter, and Spring for Mathematics and Reading. Students in grades 3-8 also take the Language Usage MAP test. Grades 5-8 will be testing this week, see the schedule below. Grades 1-4 will be testing the week of October 5 – I will send that schedule next week. A few reminders for test week:
- Students should be getting quality rest at night – early to bed!
- Students should be getting a healthy breakfast each morning
- Students should not be concerned with their scores; this is for us to know what we need to teach.
- We do NOT share data with the State of Maine or any other agency. All data is kept in-house.
- We will provide parents with their student’s scores and explanations during parent conferences scheduled for October 21 (virtually).
Thank you again for being flexible as we have begun the new school year. I’m very happy with the adjustment and transition that so many of our students have undergone starting at a new school. It’s never easy to start somewhere new, but our new students add so much to our school community! And of course, I appreciate all of our returning families as you have all had to adjust to some new policies as well which can be challenging when you’re used to “the way it’s always been”. Thank you for your continued support as we travel on this journey together. God has His hand in our lives and on our school community.
Have a wonderful week!
